7 Footwear Tips for Survivng Melbourne Cup Day

Melbourne Cup might be the "race that stops the nation", but it can also be the race that damages your feet if you're wearing the wrong type of shoe!

Most of us just LOVE to don a pair of fabulous shoes for the Cup .... but then limp home with sore feet at the end of the day!

As a podiatrist, I can't give my blessing to you wearing high heels all day every day. However, if you must wear some gravity-defying footwear today, here are my top seven tips to be kind to your feet on Cup Day ...

  1. Choose a shoe with a low heel - or better still, wear a low wedge heel.

  2. Your footwear should have a fastening (such as a lace or a buckle) that holds the shoe onto your foot.

  3. Give your feet frequent breaks from standing throughout the day - try and sit down as much as possible and take the weight off your feet.

  4. Make sure that you look at your feet frequently - checking for any injuries such as rub marks or blisters.

  5. Remember to pack some sticky plasters in your bag to use if you develop any rub marks or blisters.

  6. Take a pair of flats to change into later in the day - your feet will love you for it!

  7. On Wednesday (after all the Melbourne Cup celebrations are over) pamper your feet! Wear comfortable, well-fitted shoes all day and make sure that you double check your feet for any damage.

If you have any ongoing foot problems, please don’t hesitate to speak to us at Blackwood Podiatry for advice.

I hope you back a winner!
